Georgetown is home. It is the city Victor named himself when he was asked where he works, and it is where most of what we do starts before spreading out across Williamson County.

It is also a city of two very different housing stocks living side by side. Behind the courthouse square there are genuinely old houses — Victorian and early-century, on piers, with everything that implies about doors and floors after a hundred Texas summers. And out toward the west there is Sun City, thousands of newer homes built specifically for people who intend to grow old in them.

That second fact changes what we get asked for here more than anything else. In most towns a wheelchair ramp is an occasional job. In Georgetown it is ordinary work, because Sun City is an entire community of people who chose a house on the understanding they would not have to leave it — and the front step is usually the first thing that starts making that difficult.
